App Recommendations: Swype Keyboard

One of the strongest points when comparing Android OS to other mobile OSes is the ability to swap out key elements of the UI if you aren't happy with them. Swapping out the keyboard on your Android phone can be as easy as heading to the Android Market, searching Keyboards, download, enable, and go.  This article begins a series on several of the more popular keyboards.

Swype is a non-traditional keyboard that allows the user to swipe across letters of a word instead of tapping out text input.  For me, it took about 2 weeks to get really comfortable using the keyboard, but now that I've got it down, I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to a traditional tap to enter keyboard.  Swype shines in it's ability to enter text with one hand in portrait.  The keyboard is not nearly as functional in the landscape mode (in my opinion), though tapping can be used for data entry in either portrait or landscape mode in a pinch.  There is no autocorrect when using the Swype keyboard, and it's tapping entry is not nearly as accurate as many other keyboards, so that method of data entry is not recommended. To get a real sense of how Swype works, check out Michael Oryl of Mobileburn.com's review:

Swype comes pre-installed on most Android phones now, but if you don't have it on yours (due to a custom ROM or because your manufacturer didn't pre-load it), you can't pick it up in the Android Market.  Instead, head to Swype's website and sign up for the beta program.  Once you've done this, Swype will send you a link via email to download the Swype Installer program.  Before you open the link, on your phone, go to Settings > Applications and make sure Unknown Sources (allow install of non-market applications) is checked.  Open the link on your phone and download the installer. Your phone will alert you when the download is finished, click on the notification and you will be presented with the option to install.  Go ahead and click yes to install the Installer.  Once installed, open up the installer and follow the onscreen directions to download Swype, enable it, and set it as your default keyboard.

Swype has excellent tutorial videos on their website that will help you get the most out of the keyboard.  I highly recommend watching them.
